According to reports, several Indonesian teenagers have died as a result of a new social media fad involving jumping in front of moving vehicles.

The dangerous task, nicknamed “challenge malaikat maut” (Angel of Death challenge), is gaining traction in Southeast Asia, with participants documenting themselves performing the dangerous stunts on TikTok.

An 18-year-old man was killed instantly in Tangerang, Banten, after he and two pals rushed in front of a moving vehicle in an apparent attempt to stop it.

The teen died on the spot, according to reports, while his buddies managed to evade the truck and only sustained minor injuries. He crashed with the truck, rolled under the moving lorry, and died as a result of his injuries.

This follows the fractured skull and shattered teeth of a 14-year-old who was struck by an HGV while attempting to perform the same feat with a companion.

Locals are said to have tried to urge teenagers not to participate in the challenge because it puts their lives in danger, but their pleas have mainly gone unheeded.

In related news, a mother is suing TikTok after her daughter died while performing the “blackout challenge,” a viral challenge she saw on the app.

Tawainna Anderson, a mother from Pennsylvania, claims that her 10-year-old daughter choked to death after participating in the dangerous social media challenge, and she has launched a wrongful death lawsuit against TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance.

Tawainna Anderson claimed in the lawsuit that her daughter, Nylah Anderson, took part in a ‘blackout challenge’ after seeing it on her ‘For You’ page in December.

According to the lawsuit, which was filed in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania on Thursday, the ‘blackout challenge’ encourages users to try to hold their breath until they pass out.

Anderson transported her kid to the hospital after she passed unconscious in December 2021.

According to the lawsuit, the 10-year-old spent over a week in a pediatric intensive care unit before succumbing to her injuries.

Tawainna Anderson claimed TikTok has a “defective design” and that the company’s algorithms are exposing young children to harmful notions through its algorithms.

The lawsuit said :

The viral and deadly TikTok Blackout Challenge was thrust in front of Nylah on her TikTok For You Page … as a result of TikTok’s algorithm, The TikTok Defendants’ algorithm determined that the deadly Blackout Challenge was well-tailored and likely to be of interest to 10-year-old Nylah Anderson, and she died as a result
