Set your mobile hotspot as metered connection on your computer

On your computer, right-click on the wifi sign >> Open Network & Internet Settings >> Wi-Fi >> Your Hotspot Name >> Scroll Down >> Toggle on “Set as metered connecttion.

If you set your connection as metered, Windows will work differently to reduce data usage.

Limit your phone’s background data usage

Most of the new smartphones in the market now have higher configurations compared to laptops or desktop computer, this means a lot of background activities will be eating your data if you have any of the smarter smartphones.

If you are on a data budget you should consider turning off background data usage.

Android: Settings >> Network & internet >> Data usage >> Data Saver >> Use Data Saver.

Android (Older Versions): Settings >> More >> Mobile or Cellular Networks >> Cellular Data usage >> Click on apps to restrict background data access.

iPhone: Settings >> Screen Time >> Content & Privacy Restrictions >> Background App Activities >> Don’t Allow.

Turn off automatic app updates

One of my favorite Airtel adverts is the video that ends with “You can choose to manage everything else but not your data”. If you still have need to “manage your data” this is how to manage data usage with regards to turning off automatic app updates on your Android or iPhone device.

Android: Google PlayStore >> Menu >> Settings >> Auto-update apps >> “Do not auto-update apps”

iPhone: Settings >> iTunes and App Stores >> Turn off “Apps Updates”

Turn off automatic WhatsApp download

Turning off automatic WhatsApp file download will help you manage your data usage and also secure your phone from getting unwanted media into your gallery.

Follow the steps below to turn off automatic WhatsApp file download on your Android or iPhone.

Android: WhatsApp >> Click the menu button on the top right corner >> Settings >> Data and Storage usage >> Untick all the boxes for Photos, Audio, Videos, Documents, for the options “ When using mobile data” and “When connected to Wi-Fi”

iPhone: WhatsApp >> Settings >> Data and Storage usage >> Turn off media “Auto download” for Photos, Audio, Videos, Documents

Turn off Facebook autoplay

While browsing on Facebook these days, you will notice that videos automatically play by itself while it is in focus. Those videos consume a lot of data, you can manage your data by selecting which video to play.

Follow the steps below to turn off Facebook autoplay

Facebook: Settings >> Video and Photos >> under “Media and Contacts” select “Autoplay” and choose “Never Autoplay Video”

Turn off Twitter autoplay

Just like Facebook, Twitter video autoplay can also consume a lot of data.

Follow the steps below to turn off Twitter autoplay

Twitter autoplay >> Settings >> General >> Data usage >> select “Autoplay” and check “Never”
