A 25-year-old woman named Mary Olatayo has been detained by the Nigerian Police for reportedly trading her 3-week-old child in Ogun State for 600,000.
According to sources, the culprit and her accomplice, Chioma Esther Ogbonna, were both apprehended on August 18, 2022.
The suspect was detained as a result of a complaint the baby’s father lodged at Mowe Divisional Police Headquarters, according to a statement from the command’s spokeswoman, Abimbola Oyeyemi.
The father of the child said that Olatayo became pregnant while they were dating, which prompted him to rent an apartment for her to stay in until she gave birth to a boy.
He also stated that the woman abruptly left the flat with the child three weeks after giving birth, only to be discovered in a hotel where she was supposedly having a “h0okup” with another man.
He said that all efforts to find the baby had been ineffective.
Olatayo admitted to selling the child to a person in Anambra State for N600,000 under questioning by the police.
She insisted that it was her friend Chioma Esther Ogbonna who introduced her to the Anambra State customer, and the two of them split the proceeds equally.
Ogbonna was detained as a result of her confession, and he also supported Olatayo’s assertions.
Further inquiry found that Olatayo, a call girl from Omu-Aran in Kwara State, saw the baby as a disruption to her career and decided to get rid of it.
