Russian soldiers seized control of a decommissioned power facility north of Kyiv shortly after entering the country on February 24.

According to Energoatom, Ukraine’s state nuclear energy business, Russian forces have evacuated the plant and are their route to the border with Belarus, which was announced on Thursday.

The head of the agency in charge of the Chernobyl exclusion zone, Yevhen Kramarenko, stated on Friday that while Russian forces have left the site, some soldiers remain in the surrounding area.

The president remarked in a televised interview that “Russians were seen in the exclusion zone this morning.”

Russia did not respond to a request for comment on the alleged departure from the facility, which was the site of the world’s worst nuclear catastrophe, which occurred in 1986.

In a statement, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba stated that the country would collaborate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to determine what Russian troops did while in control of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which he warned had exposed them to dangerous levels of radiation.

In Chernobyl, “Russia acted irresponsibly on all counts, from refusing to enable station workers to carry out their responsibilities to digging trenches across radioactive areas,” Kuleba said on Friday.

After a nuclear reactor at the plant detonated in April 1986, the exclusion zone was formed to protect the surrounding area from high radiation levels.
